Abraham Lincoln

“As a nation, we began by declaring that 'all men are created equal.' We now practically read it 'all men are created equal, except negroes.' When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read 'all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and Catholics.' When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretense of loving liberty – to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocrisy.”

Viktor Frankl

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing:
the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude..."

In reference to the above Viktor Frankl quote:
In even the most extreme situation we still choose our next action even if only a thought or feeling. Even though a threat may lead to our sure death it does not absolutely determine our next choice or the consequences of that choice. When we experience fear the larger danger is to choose powerlessness. Closely focusing on a bully is a mistake. Listening too closely to fearful and impulsive people as they make impulsive choices is a mistake.  Owning my choice and my possible outcomes gives me at least a bit of autonomy... and peace.

Tears... the spring of feeling.

Feelings... the deep well of need.

Needs... the well bucket of simple plans that can work.

Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.

Every time I seek perfection in a task I loose the ecstasy of finishing the task.

John D. McDonald

Today, my friends, we each have one day less, every one of us.
And joy is the only thing that slows the clock.

John D. McDonald, The Scarlet Ruse, a Travis McGee novel.

Thomas Paine

And however our eyes may be dazzled, or our ears deceived by sound;
however prejudice may warp our wills, or interest darken our understanding,
the simple voice of nature and of reason will say, it is right.

Thomas Paine, Common Sense, 1776

Mahatma Gandhi

Truth stands, even if there be no public support. It is self-sustained.

I suppose leadership at one time meant muscles; but today it means getting along with people.

You must be the change you wish to see in the world.

Abraham Lincoln

I have never had a feeling politically that did not spring from the sentiments embodied in the Declaration of Independence.

Plainly, the central idea of secession, is the essence of anarchy.

Whenever I hear any one arguing for slavery I feel a strong impulse to see it tried on him personally.

...vulnerable with God... the risk is infinite, though I have never been hurt.

...vulnerable with my child... it can not actually be avoided.

...vulnerable with regular humans... the risk is always real and often foolish.

...vulnerable with my Beloved... I am the most fragile organism.
                                                   I am the bravest adventurer.
I am the astonished discoverer of myself.
